After almost 2 months, I finally got around to getting someone to video tape me doing a "technique" session with one of the Thais. On my first day, I thought "technique" meant it would be like a private lesson where they show me something and I drill it with them for a while. Looking back, I think they must have thought I was incompetent on that first day. It turns out that a "technique" session in Thailand is actually just light sparring. I guess there's nothing better than learning by doing... or having it done to you.
I'd like to note that light sparring in Thailand isn't the same as in America either. The contact is much more controlled, and there is almost an air of playfulness to it. Coming from the sparring culture in America, I think that this style of sparring could find a really good place in America especially for enabling more casual Muay Thai practitioners to enjoy the fun of sparring without the discomfort. At the same time, it allows more experienced people to try new techniques without the fear of getting your clocks cleaned. In general, it seems like a great way to promote relaxation while sparring/fighting, which in the long run can really benefit long term growth as a fighter.
Here are some video clips of me doing some of these rounds. It was funny to see that, in these videos, the contact is actually twice the level it normally is. I think the fact that he knew he was being filmed and probably shown to the world triggered some pride, and he made sure I was on the overall losing end of the sparring whereas on other days, he would allow me to come out 50/50 many times.
Enjoy :)
